Description
Bailey Island Bridge, Maine – The Bailey Island Bridge is located along Route 24 in Harpswell, Maine. It connects Bailey Island and Orr’s Island. Construction of the bridge started in 1927 and was completed in 1928. The design is referred to as a “cribstone” design, and it may be the only granite cribstone bridge left in the world today. The cribstone design consists of granite slabs (above) stacked on top of one another, which allows the tide to flow through without disturbing the structure. It is 1,150-foot long and listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
